As mom enters a new phase of her life, her seven children begin a new adventure too!
Mom turned 89 this year and what she has been avoiding for many years has come to pass. She does not need to be living in that big house by herself. I am trying to give the seven of us place to communicate with each other about the good, the bad, the details of how her days go and what she likes and what she doesn’t like.
On Dec 3rd and 17th she had cataract surgery and I spent the night with her after each and took her for a follow-up with the doctor the next day. After the first surgery, I realized she would not be able to deal with all the different drops, so I brought her home with me. The following weekend K came and spent the weekend at her house, then brought her back to my house. After the one week doctor followup, she went back to her house until the second surgery and has been with me since. We have moved her into our bedroom, since it is the only downstairs bedroom but discovered early on that the bed was too high for her to comfortably get in and out of, so we removed the box spring and put a sheet of plywood under the mattress. It is much lower, easier for her to get in and out and is surprisingly comfortable. We brought the box with under garments so we didn’t have to move too much out of our dresser but gave up space in our closet and bathroom. We also put a small desk in her room for her to keep her snacks and her files. I’m glad there was a chair in the room because she does like to sit in it to get dressed and read her mail. She is getting adjusted to the layout of the room and bath and the lights she wants on at night.
Mom is doing well in our home and adjusting to the new situation but not ready to give up her car or house yet. I will try to write every few days and let you know how things are going and what I discover about living with mom, so that as she transitions to your house and you take over this blog, things may go smoothly.
Off to bed! Love you, C
